Dr. Darrin Shandley is a therapeutic optometrist and optometric glaucoma specialist. He is a graduate of Texas A&M, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences. He continued his education at the University of Houston College of Optometry, where he graduated with a Doctor of Optometry degree.
Dr. Darrin has trained at the Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center, MS Eye Center of Houston, the Eye Wellness Center, the San Jose Clinic, and the Eye Center of the Heights in Houston. He received a Clinical Excellence Award and the Zelda Schiffman Award in Neuro-Ophthalmology. He is a member of the Texas Optometric Association, as well as the American Optometric Association.
In his free time, Dr. Darrin enjoys spending time with his wife and three children, fishing, and spending time outdoors. He speaks both English and Spanish.
Robert M. Barton, Jr., O.D. has been practicing optometry for 42 years. Dr. Barton specializes in comprehensive eye exams including prescribing eyeglasses, contact lens, as well as, diagnosing and treating ocular infections. He is skilled in foreign body removals, specialty contact lens fittings and glaucoma detection.
He attended Southwestern University from 1966 to 1969. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in 1971 from Southwest Texas State University. He received an additional Bachelor of Science Degree in 1973 from the University of Houston and in 1975 received his Doctorate of Optometry Degree. In 1992 he received his post graduate degree from the University of Houston in Ocular Therapeutics Certification. In December of 2000 he became certified as a Glaucoma Specialist in the State of Texas.
Dr. Barton has been part of the Texas State Optical network since 1979 and has been practicing in Portland since 1982. He is an active member of the community. He volunteers to provide eye care in conjunction with various groups such as the Lion’s Club and Taft educators. He takes great pride in supporting the local high school, and has been a member of the Gregory Portland Booster Club since 1995. Dr. Barton’s desire to help others stretches beyond the borders of Texas. He has traveled to Guatemala and Mexico to provide eye care to poverty-stricken areas and was awarded Amigos de las Americas (Friends of the Americas) for his time and contribution.
Voted Corpus Christi’s Best of the Best Eye Doctor in 2006 and Portland’s Best of the Best Eye Doctor in 2015, Dr. Barton has developed a reputation for his gentle bedside manner and commitment to providing excellent eyecare. He has dedicated his career to building strong relationships with his patients and taking a genuine concern in their vision needs and overall ocular health. He is grateful to all his patients for their continuing support over the years.
In his free time, Dr. Barton enjoys fishing, kayaking, and spending time with his family. He has been married to his wife for 40 years. They have a son and daughter, and now proud grandparents to two grandchildren.

Mary Lou has worked as an optician for 49 years, working alongside Dr. Barton at TSO for 28 years of her optical career. Fluent in both English and Spanish, Mary Lou is skilled and experienced in pairing the right frame to fit each patient’s individual style and needs.
Becky has worked alongside Dr. Barton for 30 years and has a total of 36 years of experience in the optometry field. In addition to being bilingual and ABO certified, she works diligently to make sure our patient’s insurance benefits are verified and current prior to their arrival.
Mike has worked at our office for 2 years. With 32 years of experience in the optical business and knowledgeable in various lens designs, Mike is sure to help you pick a pair of glasses that fits you and your lifestyle.
Melanie has been with TSO for 2 years and takes pride in making all our patient’s feel welcome and valued. She has 17 years of experience in the optometry field, working as various positions such as optometric technician, office manager, and front desk specialist.
Karen has been working as an optometric technician at TSO for 2 years. With 4 years of experience, Karen is knowledgeable on various ocular conditions and pathology. She works closely with Dr. Barton ensuring that each examination is personalized for each patient’s needs.
